Paul painting in the Pilgrims Annex Jan 2010
It has come around so quickly!
The exhibition of Paul’s works opens this Saturday, April 16th and runs until May 12th in the gallery at the Blue Cedar Cafe.
For those that do not know the Blue Cedar, it is towards the top of the High Street on the right as you walk up, roughly opposite St. John’s Church with its staircase entrance located next to the Shaw Trust shop.
To date almost 70 paintings have been loaned for the exhibition including 4 of the Pilgrims paintings. For those that have never seen it, this includes the notable ‘Rhiannon’ painting.
Please do go along and have a look, we want to ‘do Paul proud’.
This Sunday (10th April) there is a kite flying day at the Tor, organised by the National Trust. Time is between 11am and 2pm. The NT description is

Spring is here - the clematis is flowering
In case we had any nagging doubts, spring has definitely come to the Pilgrims garden. The clematis is covered in flowers, the passion flower has new foliage coming and the Japanese Jasmin is turning to its summer colour.
Graham has done a great job on the garden over the winter, building on the work of the Garden Angels 18 months ago – the garden will be looking stunning this summer. The only casualty we can find is the bay tree which was severely hit by the frost. Graham has removed the dead wood and we are pretty confident it will come back ok. Read more »

Pauls Cherry is sprouting
It’s only two weeks ago that we planted the cherry tree Layla had bought us as a memorial to Paul. It was sitting around for a couple of weeks before that because of the frost.
It seems amazing that just a fortnight ago it was bare twigs and already it is covered in leaves.
Paul loved to sit outside the annex and watch the birds in the early morning – they didn’t seem to mind him being there. The cherries should bring even more birds to the garden for Paul to gaze upon (hopefully the birds will leave us some of the fruit to eat!), as well as the Cherry’s beautiful blossom.

The last rays of the day
It was the hottest day of the year so far – 22 degrees here! They went out for afternoon tea at Sharpham (but I’m sure they’ll tell you all about that!).
I’ve been sunning myself instead – far too good an opportunity to waste and now I’m just catching the last of the rays, which for some strange reason seem to be falling behind this flowerpot!

Glastonbury Tor from Sharpham Tea Garden
As prompted by ‘He who must be obeyed’, (Dexter), whilst he was sunning himself this afternoon we took a visit to Sharpham Tea Garden which lies in the Levels. Apparently it is precisely 2.2 miles to walk there – we will find out the route as this would be a great afternoon walk from Glastonbury.
The place is greatly frequented by groups of artists and when you see the aspect of the Tor from Sharpham it is obvious to see why. As a matter of interest, the wonderful lake that lies beside the tea garden is up for sale. Read more »

The sunniest spot can be anywhere!
Now all that cold and wet weather seems to be over, at least it was today, I have to take advantage and revert to my normal sun-worshiping self!
The problem is that the sunny spot can be just anywhere! (and no waiters in sight!)
The funeral for Paul has now been and gone and life is slowly returning to normal. I think Paul would have been amazed at what happened on Friday.
St. John’s Church was packed to the rafters with all possible seating being utilised and and many people having to stand.
David MacGeogh did a wonderful job presiding over events and after an hour of fantastic contributions from friends, Paul’s coffin left the church to a standing ovation.
I think Paul would have been amazed at the event and would wonder at how so many people saw that he had touched their lives. Along with the desecration of the Holy Thorn last December, this was a rare event that brought the whole community together and reflected what Glastonbury can do so well when it works together. Of this I think that Paul would be proud and it clearly was a part of his ‘task’ in this his adopted home town.
It was certainly a privilage to be a part of this celebration for Paul and we would like to thank all who contributed and those who helped us to bring it together, with especial thanks to Revd. David MacGeoch for his wisdom throughout the process.
Farewell Paul, may your soul fly free.
As usual, a full programme of Glastonbury events for the Spring Equinox, including:
Sun 20th March – 12.00 Chalice Well Spring Equinox meditation
Sun 20th March – 19.30 Spring Equinox celebration, Goddess Hall
Mon 21st March – 12.00 Daisy Centre Spring Equinox celebration.
Many who have stayed at Pilgrims over the past couple of winters will have met Paul who lived with us during the inclement months.
It is with great sorrow that we must tell you that Paul passed over just after midnight on 1st March.
Paul was a big part of our lives and a great friend who will be much missed. The good news is that we were with Paul when he died, he was not alone out on the Levels where his soul would normally reside.
For those who can make it there will be a funeral at St. John’s church on Friday 18th March at 2.00pm followed by a wake at the George and Pilgrims. The funeral will be open for all who knew him to speak or perform in his memory. Be warned however that it is likely to be standing room only so arrive early.
For those that cannot make it, an online memorial has been set up for Paul which you can access here. Please view and contribute.
Looking ahead, there will be a retrospective exhibition of Paul’s work at the Blue Cedar Gallery for a month from April 16th. The whole gallery has been given over to Paul and if you have a painting or drawing of him that you would like to include then please let us know. Additioanally we are loooking at cataloguing his work for a book of his paintings. Again please let us know if you have a painting or drawing or know of someone else who has – Paul was a prolific painter for over 30 years and so this will be quite a task.
This week we were involved in the making of a short video about Paul which is now available on here. Please have a look and when you can, raise a glass and a prayer for one of life’s great gentlemen who touched so many of us.
A really nice little video of the Glastonbury environs can be found on the Town Council website by selecting the ‘Video’ button after clicking here.
Even better, it includes a few frames of Paul painting in Northload Street.

From 2011 the Avalon Faery Ball becomes twice yearly.
As always we had a few naughty Faeries playing in the night!
